Interior trim is a powerful tool to give your house a special touch that everybody is going to notice but may not know exactly what it is. Trim can be used in many places in your house: windows, doors, ceiling, baseboards, chair rail, crown molding, and even on walls as a decorative detail.

Adding trim to a room can elevate the beauty of the space that gives a nice, crisp, and finished look, and the best part is the functionality. Beyond making your house beautiful, trim has the ability to close gaps and give continuity , for example, with the baseboard connecting the floor and walls.

Today, we’re looking in-depth into types of trim for windows and doors, baseboards, chair rails, and crown molding. You know your taste, and you’ll be able to choose with your builder what is appropriate for your home. Additionally, trim is something you can add in your house to update and decorate the space as well.

Window and Door Trim

It is essential to have trim in the window and door to hide ragged edges, make them “pop”, and highlight the white when matched with rich colors in the walls. When done well with framing and painting, the trim is almost invisible. Another option is combining window and door sets, but it is not mandatory and is usually painted with gloss to be easier to clean.

Baseboard

A home baseboard is a decorative and functional type of trim that is placed along the base of every wall to connect the trim with the floor. Additionally, it prevents floorboards from breaking, insects from getting inside the house, keeping dirt from getting under the walls, and beautifying the junction at the wall and floor. It’s available in bare wood, MDF, polystyrene, and primed wood. Usually, it measures 2-8” in height, and thicker baseboards can have designer profiles and it requires the addition of a quarter-round at the base of the baseboard to cover the gap between the wall and the floor.

Chair rail

Chair rail is a thin strip of wood trim that goes all around a room at waist height. This gives a room a special touch, dressing up the area, and protecting the wall from chair bumps. However, it is not an essential detail to have. It is most common in traditional-style houses, it can be mounted in a wainscoting or stand alone, and it’s beautiful with different tones of the same color on the wall.

Crown Molding

Crown molding is the horizontal strip that is at the top of the wall in conjunction with the ceiling. It’s more aesthetic than functional, giving a fancy look for your house. It’s usually painted with the same color as the ceiling to give a continuous and open look, and it is installed at an angle.

Now you know the types of wood trim the market offers. Consider the style of your house and what you want to add to your home. It’s a stylish way to update your personal space and give a lovely and luxurious touch to the rooms.
