Pros and Cons of Steel Framing

Steel framing has been used in construction for many years, since the 20th century. It was mostly used in train stations, and after that, it was popularized in churches and other buildings as well. Currently, it is utilized in large constructions like agricultural buildings and warehouses, but also in offices, schools, public buildings, and some residences.

In addition to that, it is very common due to the many benefits this type of construction has, like durability, affordability, and sustainability. Additionally, with advances in technology, the cutting and prefabrication of steel kits for homes are more cost-effective and versatile. However, there are drawbacks to consider, so we are going over the advantages and disadvantages of this type of construction.

Pros

1. Strength and durability

The first advantage is that the structural steel components are lighter and stronger than wood, which means that it can resist natural disasters. Because a steel frame construction is so durable and is an investment for life, some suppliers back it up with 50-year structural warranties.

2. Fire resistant

Steel is a non-combustible material and highly resistant to fire, which means that it prevents the fire from spreading in the building, which dramatically reduces the risk of fire. This is a great option compared to other materials that burn up quickly, like wood.

3. Moisture and weather resistant

Some components that make the structural steel have exceptional moisture resistance. These components — carbon, hot zinc, and extra powder treatments — will make the material more resistant and immune to the effects of water exposure.

4. 100% recyclable

We have some steel that is called BlueScope on the market that is 100% recyclable. This is a better environmental practice than using wood, which needs toxic chemicals to resist pests and hazards.

Cons

1. Reduce flexibility on site

When you buy the steel structure, you have to have the measurements precisely calculated before having it on site. Unlike wood, where you can cut it down or hammer nails to join pieces, you can’t change the steel framing after you buy it. The steel comes ready to build, and it can only be changed when sent back to the workshop, which could be a big problem because the project has to be held up while this is fixed

2. Support structures

Steel framing rarely goes by itself. You have to use support material to finish the building, like drywall, insulation, sheathing, and supplementary wooden components.

3. Thermal conductivity

Steel is a high conductor of heat, and that is a negative point. This means that the house is going to be hotter than other types of construction.
