For many homeowners, doing maintenance in the house happens when something goes wrong, like overflowing gutters or weather damage on the roof. However, what is advisable is to always keep the house in good condition, and when the seasons change, you will be prepared for those changes. A checklist brings not just organization for the housework and upkeep, you will keep your family safe, save money on professional repairs, and will preserve the value of your property.

Today, we are going over a guide for how to maintain your house in any season. Summer hasn’t ended yet, so take advantage of our advice, and let’s do the job!

Summer

This is the time to be bold! Let’s think about this, summer is the best time to be outside — the warm temperatures and low precipitation the summer offers give us more comfortable working conditions to do the outside repairs that are not possible in other seasons.

  • Make repairs in the home siding and painting the exterior.
  • Do you have an outside deck? If yes, it is time to repair, clean, or paint if needed.
  • It’s common in the window wells to accumulate debris, make sure to clean up all of it.
  • Fix the wood fence if it’s broken, and after that, you should clean it, and apply the sealant.
  • Flush out the water in the heater to take out all the sediments.
  • If you notice some drainage problems in your yard, now is the time to repair or build a new one.

Fall

In the fall, it is time to prepare your house for the winter season. This way, in the winter, you can just be inside and take care of lighter chores.

  • Test the sump pump. You’re thinking how, right? You just need to pour water down until the pump turns on.
  • Call the furnace/central heating service to have the annual maintenance done.
  • Speaking of calling, it is time to call the chimney people to clean it.
  • In the windows, remove the screens and store them. Now it’s time to install storm windows.
  • If you have window air conditioners, remove them. If you have a central air conditioning, winterize it or replace the filters.
  • Remove leaves and debris from the water drainage system.
  •  Reverse the ceiling fan to rotate in a clockwise direction, and this will help distribute the warm air throughout the house.
  • Protect outdoor faucets with foam covers .

Winter

Winter is the time to just lay down and stay warm inside. Just kidding! Here you should do damage control, so with the cold weather, you should keep  everything working, so it’s time to pay attention to that.

  • Check the gutters and the lower roof, and if they have ice, remove it.
  • Check the covers on the outdoor faucets so that they don’t get iced up.
  • Now is a great time to do the indoor cleaning. You can do the basement, garage, and other indoor spaces that were neglected during the sunny and warm days.
  • Make sure the ground next to the house is graded to prevent flooding in the house.
  • Check the electrical system in the house.
  • When temperatures get to freezing, turn on all the faucets inside and outside just enough so that it drips, preventing the pipes from freezing.

Spring

In the spring, is time to clean up any mess and damage from winter. As the weather is not stable, big projects like painting can be done in the summer, so don’t forget that!

  • Gutters again, this is something you should always maintain clean, use a water hose and let the water drain.
  • Check if the exterior siding has some damage, but repair it in the summer when the weather is more stable.
  • Clean and replace window screens.
  • In late spring, install the window air conditioners.
  • Reverse the ceiling fan to cool down the room.

This is a great checklist that will tell you what to do in each season. Make sure to keep up with these tips, and you will have fewer problems to fix in the house!
