When the temperature is declining, it’s time to prepare your home for the winter. However, the best time to do that is before it gets freezing cold outside. Winterizing your home is important to stay safe, since there will be many cold months ahead. Let’s look at the first things you should do.

Winterizing your heating system.

This is the most important part of the home in the wintertime, because, without the heating system, you cannot survive. We’re going to begin our series with this system.

Test run: The ideal time is to do it before October. Turn the thermostat to heat mode at 80 degrees Fahrenheit, then check if the furnace is working normally. If yes, turn it down to the normal temperature. If it doesn’t work, you should try to understand the problem and see if you can fix it yourself, but if it is not possible, call a professional technician to do the job.

Replace the air filter: Having a new air filter will give quality to the air of your home. Each furnace has its own type of filter, so you should check in the owner’s manual to know which one to buy.

Check fuel supply: If your home has a propane or oil furnace, make sure they are full and ready to go in the wintertime, you will need them to be at full capacity.

Inspect and clean heating vents: Clean out any obstructions in the heating vents, as it is fundamental for the air to flow naturally. The recommendation is to clean them every year or 2.

Check for carbon monoxide leaks: This is one of the most important things to check, because that can be very dangerous. And you can do that in an easy way with an inexpensive test badge or a battery-operated alarm.

Check exhaust vents: You should make sure that they are open and free of obstructions. If they are not working well, that interferes with the furnace’s ability to burn efficiently and properly vent the exhaust gases.

Today, we saw how to take care of the heating system. Keep following our blog to know more about how to do winter maintenance in your house.
