Why You Should Waterproof Your Basement

One of the essential qualities a house should have is the ability to keep dry, even in the wettest conditions. When a house has a basement, this becomes the main concern, due to the basement’s below-ground level and its proximity to the aquifer/groundwater

A reliable and dry basement can expand the living area of your home and increase the value of the property, if you renovate the area. However, if it is still unfinished but dry, the benefit is that it keeps your house from having structural problems, and the upper floors will remain in good condition.

By now, you should be asking yourself why your basement should be dry, and we will give you the reasons. First, if you want to make the space habitable with a renovation, which is a smart idea, since basements usually mirror the upper floor plans, you are going to have twice the space it had before.

However, if remodeling is not in your plans, you will still want to have a dry basement. Moisture can rot the fundamental structures from your house, and mold and mildew can develop, causing huge damage, not to mention that mold can be toxic.

Waterproofing a basement is a set of dependent steps that will make the area driest as possible. In this area, the house is divided into three zones: outermost, middle, and inner. The outermost zone is outside of the house but not connected with the house, which is the improperly graded earth that allows water to flow to your house, and the goal is to stop that before it happens.

The second is the middle zone, the exterior of your house itself with the foundation wall, gutters, drainpipes, windows, and window well covers. The main goal here is to make sure the water-elimination system is doing its job well, and the water protection system is not letting the water enter the house. Last, the inner zone is everything you have inside the house, which means the foundation wall, flooring, and sump pump.

Knowing what can happen when your basement is not well-insulated will help you find the best ways to keep your basement dry and take advantage of this space. After all, it only benefits you to take care of this area in your home. Keep following our blog to know more about methods to make and maintain your basement dry.
